Can someone verify ownership of my site by adding a meta tag to the body of my page?

Worried that someone might attempt to verify ownership of your website and gain control of it via webmaster tools? It’s probably one of the things that users end up worrying about especially when they go through the website verification process for webmaster tool. Can it actually happen and should it be something that webmasters should be overly concerned about? What can be done to prevent such things from happening in the first place?

Well first things first – such questions actually came up before and was addressed promptly by Matt Cutts in a Google webmaster help video featured above. Do check it out!

No cause for concern – the process on how verify ownership of a website

As Matt reassuringly tell us, the scenario in which people might attempt to sabotage your SEO (search engine optimisation) efforts by attempting to “hijack” your website through the verify ownership process is highly unlikely and something that webmasters generally shouldn’t be worried about. Why exactly is this so?

Well the Meta tags for the verification process only works when embedded in the heading of a web page and nowhere else. Thus unless you are allowing general users to edit or modify your web page headings (which is highly unusual) then there’s simply no way something like that would ever happen.

What are your own thoughts about Google’s process to verify ownership of a website and do you have any concerns relevant to the matter?
