Can too many redirects from a single URL have a negative effect on crawling?

Wondering if too many “hops” or redirects from a particular URL can actually hinder search engines from completely crawling your website? Well such a question is really important considering that it could adversely affect SEO results.

As shown in the Google webmaster video above, the answer is certainly a big yes! Too many 301 and 302 redirects can cause Google bots to cease following and unable to crawl through your website. This means that having too many redirects on a single URL can cause your website not to rank or index properly. Just as the old saying goes – too much of anything is a bad thing and when it comes to online marketing, the same thing certainly applies with URL redirects.

So just how many redirects are ideal for a single URL and when is it too much?

Now for search engine marketing webpage URLs, Google advises a maximum of two redirects. You can get away with having 3 but that’s just pushing it and beyond that – you’re already asking for trouble.  The fact that having more than one type of redirects for a single URL also interferes with the crawling of your website is also worth considering.

A 301is known as a permanent redirect while a 302 is called a temporary redirect – having both on a single URL will often have you sending a mixed message which is bound to confuse search engine crawlers. Thus it is often best to stick with one type depending on your search engine marketing needs.
