Using URL shorteners – can it affect your anchor text?

Are you starting to use URL shorteners in your link building strategy but worried that it might end up affecting link juice? Considering the fact that Google now uses links from Google and Twitter as ranking signals, it’s a fairly common practice in SEO now days but the question remains – do they actually pass anchor text?

 

No harm in using URL shorteners

As explained in the video above, Google sees URL shorteners as no different from a typical 301 redirect and will most definitely pass anchor text. Thus one certainly won’t have anything to worry about when it comes to using it for search engine optimisation.

As you may already know, social networks like Twitter have a fairly limited character cap hampering the use of long URLs. People who wish to build and promote links using these social networks needed to find a way to shorten their links which is exactly where URL shorteners come in. Although they do pass anchor text in itself, keep in mind that certain features such as Twitter’s webpages implement the “no follow” text rule which means you won’t be getting any link juice there.
