Does Google still need text to understand my site?

Does Google require text content for websites?

Wondering if Google actually requires text content on a website in order to “recognize” it? Just like the individual who posted the question for the webmaster help video above, you may be thinking about removing most of your text content and switching to videos or images. Such a move may significantly improve conversion and bounce rates but is it really a good idea though? Won’t such a move possibly jeopardize your SEO efforts?

Text content – required by Google to recognize and index your website

As explained in the video shown above, Google does require text content in order to recognize your website. Without text content on your search engine marketing website, the search engine won’t be able to index your website much less figure out what its all about. Keep in mind that search engine crawlers cannot analyze images and videos so imagine what is going to happen if you take out most of your web content?

If you absolutely need to take out most of your text content and replace them with images or videos then there are a couple of options that you could look into to “balance” things out. Google acknowledges that some people may find added SEO and search engine marketing benefits for choosing to a website that is mostly comprised by images or videos – most of your target market may find it attractive and pleasant to use.

Explore the middle ground by making sure that you submit alt information and description tags on all the images and videos that you’re using on your website. You can also caption your images when appropriate. You can also make use of web fonts as suggested in the video. That way, search engines will have a good idea what your images are all about and give Google bots something to “crawl” on.
