Does linking my two sites together violate the quality guidelines?

Linking your sites together

Suppose you have two websites and thinking about linking them together, is it really a good idea to do so? Perhaps you are wondering if Google allows it at all or perhaps it’s a violation of the search engine’s policies. Given the search engine’s reputation for strictly cracking down hard on attempts to manipulate search engine rankings, the last thing webmasters want is to invoke the ire of the search engine’s algorithms.

Let’s go ahead and check out Google’s take on the subject. Take the time to review the video featured above to see what Matt Cutts – Google’s webmaster has to say about the matter.

Linking sites – not inherently a bad thing

Now as explained by Matt in the Google webmaster help video shown above, linking two websites that you both own is not at all a bad thing and does not in any way violate Google’s policies. As a matter of fact, you can have as much as 5 linked domains as long as they are related to one another – a user interested in one website would also be interested in the other.

The problem comes when you are not dealing with just 2 to 5 websites but 20 or a hundred! You don’t need that many domains about car insurance or whatever niche your website is in and when you have that many websites, they are more than likely to be spam since webmasters  often end up not putting much work   on individual sites. Cross linking that much websites can be seen as an attempt to manipulate page rank and will appear very artificial which will hurt user experience and that’s exactly the kind of situation that Google hopes to avoid.

So what are your own thoughts about linking sites together?
