Does using stock photos on your pages have a negative effect on rankings?

Using stock photos on webpages

Wondering if the use of stock photos presents any adverse effect on search engine rankings? It’s a fair question considering Google’s emphasis on high quality content and images on your web pages is certainly a significant part of that.  Check out what Google Webmaster Matt Cutts have to say about the matter in the video featured above.

Stock photos – no bearing on search engine rankings

Now as explained in the video above, it doesn’t matter if you are using original or stock photos on your web page content. It currently has no bearing on search engine rankings and isn’t a ranking signal that search engine algorithms presently look into. It’s not to say though that it’s not all important in SEO – users will ultimately be drawn more towards web pages that feature relevant and high quality images.

Having said that, the webmaster goes on to state that it is an excellent suggestion for additional ranking signals and something that Google may look into in the future favoring websites that use original images over those that use generic and reused photos for their web content. If so, the use of stock images will ultimately have a profound effect on search engine optimisation in the future.

So what do you think? Should Google consider the use of original images over stock photos as a ranking signal and how is it going to affect search engine optimisation in the future?
