Frustrated about a certain competitor website managing to rank high for keywords that you are certain doesn’t even exist anywhere on that particular site? Is Google playing favorites and isn’t that simply unfair? That’s probably how most people would feel in such situations. However, let’s not get carried away – as explained in the video above, there are perfectly good reasons for websites to attain good SEO rankings for keywords that it doesn’t have on-site.

Indeed  there are some perfectly good reasons why websites can still manage to rank high for keywords that they don’t even have anywhere on site. It doesn’t automatically mean that something is amiss or that owners of the website are doing something wrong. For one thing, it’s highly possible that most of the anchor text links pointing to that website happen have those keywords!

While it’s also possible that the website concerned could be doing something unscrupulous such as “cloaking”, it’s highly unlikely and a rare scenario in search engine optimisation. Most people would agree that it’s just not worth the risk – Google’s algorithm has become fairly effective in preventing and panelizing such practices.

Of course you can always opt to take a closer look by simulating Google bot and fetching the web page yourself but it’s unlikely that you’ll find anything wrong. Webmasters are better off focusing on improving quality, finding better keywords to outrank competitors and better overall SEO strategy!
