How does Google determine page speed?

How does Google actually assess page speed?

Are you wondering about how Google actually determines page speed for a certain website? Conventional wisdom tell us that website speed is important in search engine marketing and paves the way for better search rankings.

Now the Google Toolbar provides a clear indicator of what the search engine actually thinks about the page speed of your website. The value is represented in terms of delay – seconds. How does the search engine actually come up with this number though? Should webmasters be overly concerned about the values indicated?

Page speed as the Google Toolbar sees it

As explained in the webmaster video shown above where Matt Cutts entertains a question from someone who was overly concerned upon seeing an 8 second delay in his website speed, all the information presented is based only on the information collected by toolbar. So what does this mean?

The Google toolbar collects information from users who’ve opted to have their data collected. Keep in mind that a number of factors can affect perceived website speed and often times perceived delays have nothing to do with the website itself – connectivity problems, network settings and other technical issues.

More importantly, the page speed indicated on the toolbar is rarely significant enough to affect search engine rankings except of course in extreme cases wherein almost all users report excessively long loading times for a certain website.
