How does Google use human raters in web search?

The role of human raters in web search

As you may already know, Google does employ human quality raters in web search results. What is unclear for many webmasters though is how much of an influence do these raters have in deciding search rankings and results in their SEO or search engine optimisation campaign.

So how exactly does the search engine make use of their human raters in deciding web search results? Check out the video featured above as Google webmaster Matt Cutts sheds some light on the matter.

Human Raters does not directly affect web search results

A lot of webmasters often have the misconception that Google has this secret group of human raters that decide which website gets shown in search results and which ones are dropped. As explained by Matt in the video, this is certainly not the case.

Although they do have human raters in the loop, it’s only to supplement Google’s search ranking algorithm which still requires that human element for it to work optimally. In the webmaster’s own words, nothing will replace a human’s intuition and judgment on what is useful/high quality and what is not. Hence Google has its raters conduct “blind” side-by-side comparison testing on queries which the algorithms take into account based on search query behaviors of search engine users.

The only time that human influence web search results directly is when taking a manual webspam actions but that’s another story.
