How important is it to have keywords in a domain name?

Do you need to have keywords included in your domain name?

Need help trying to figure out the perfect domain name for your website with the intention of competing for a certain niche in the SEO business? Is it at all important to include your keywords in your domain name? Check out the webmaster video shown above and hear out what Google has to say about the matter?

Keyword laden domain names versus brandable or “catchy” domain names

As explained by Google webmaster Matt Cutts in the video above, there are two ways on how to go about choosing domain names for websites. You can either go for something “catchy” and easy to remember or you can opt for keyword laden names for your domain that describe what your site is all about (e.g. buyviagraonline, pestcontrolmatrix etc.)

Now while opinions do vary on the matter, it’s not at all necessary to include keywords in your domain name in order to succeed in SEO. As a matter of fact, a lot of very successful websites online such as Twitter don’t even have any keywords on their domain name and fairly easy to recall making them much more brandable. On the other hand, having keywords in your domain name makes it that much easier to link to your domain with your best anchor text keywords.

Hence when it comes to choosing a domain name for search engine optimisation, people will have to make a tossup between loading their URL with one of their best keywords or coming up with something brandable and easy to recall. It all depends on what you are ultimately trying to achieve although Google certainly recommends that people do the latter as they go on to say that the search engine is thinking about turning down the knob on any current SEO advantages with regards to having one’s keywords in a domain name.
