How would a non-optimized site outrank a site which has done SEO?

Non SEO optimized websites with better rankings

Doing a bit of competitor analysis and found a bunch of websites ranking better than you do with little or practically no SEO? It can be quite frustrating especially when it seems you’ve invested so much in your search engine optimisation to the point that it seems Google just isn’t being unfair. How is this even possible?

How some websites could actually rank higher even without SEO

Indeed it can be quite disheartening to find competitor websites ranking when it seems that they don’t actually do any optimisation at all. However as explained by web master Matt Cutts in the video above, it can certainly happen simply because employing search engine marketing strategies and methodologies isn’t the only way for websites to rank well (although it certainly improves one’s chances)

Now just because you are optimizing your website is no assurance that you ought to rank better than those that don’t. People that are not concerned or savvy enough with SEO can still manage to get their websites to rank fairly well. Also keep in mind that while doing competitor analysis, Google may give you an exhaustive list of links to a particular website but certainly not all of them. The competitor website in question may simply have a couple of powerful links from high ranking and reputable websites which explains the page rank.

Search engine optimisation strategies and methodologies are not absolute requirements for a high page rank. Google’s basic philosophy is that if a website is good and offers something of value that users can clearly appreciate then it will ultimately get to rank well with or without SEO.“““““
