If I haven’t been participating in link schemes, do I need to worry about my links?

Should webmasters be worried about their links despite avoiding link schemes?

As all webmasters probably already know, Google thoroughly dislikes paid link schemes and mass linking strategies. It’s an all common black hat SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) strategy and one that the search engine fiercely discourages with various algorithm updates and penalties serious enough to send websites to the bottom of search results.

Having said that, a lot of webmasters are often overly worried about their link profiles. Is there good reason for webmasters to worry especially those who’ve made it a point to steer clear of any link building schemes? Check out the Google webmaster help video featured above to see what Google has to say about the matter.

No need to worry as long as webmasters avoid participating in link schemes

As Google webmaster Matt Cutts explains in the video, webmasters who’ve made it a point to avoid getting involved in link building schemes generally don’t need to worry.  Most webmasters who stick with white hat SEO strategies and methodologies generally don’t have an issue with their link profiles especially when they put in the effort to produce useful and high quality content.

However, in the off chance that webmasters do receive an unnatural links warning from the search engine, webmasters will have to reflect on their past activities. Remember that even though you may have not personally engaged in such activities, the people that you have helping you in your search engine optimisation campaign may have. The time spent by webmasters worrying about their link profile is better spent properly overseeing all the SEO works being done to promote their website online.
