Just how significant is freshness as a ranking signal? It’s a question that tends to linger in the minds of many people in the SEO business. After all, Google has mentioned repeatedly in the past that frequently updated webpages get a ranking boost over those that aren’t. However, there’s a “twist” in this particular statement that people tend to misunderstand. The search engine hopes to clarify the matter through the webmaster help video posted above.

 

 

The real deal with freshness in SEO

Now as explained in the video above, freshness is indeed one of more than 200 ranking signals that Google uses but in order to qualify for an algorithmic boost, content need to qualify as a QDF (Queries that Deserve Freshness).  Such content often revolve around recent events – storms, earthquakes, new product launches and similar events.

Needless to say, you can’t just change a couple of text on your web content or modify published date to something more recent and call it “fresh” content. Unfortunately that is how a lot of people tend to interpret freshness as a ranking signal which certainly isn’t the case.

Regardless of whether it applies as a ranking signal or not, webmaster should ensure that their content remains fresh and updated. SEO rankings aside, outdate content are sure to turn off users eliminating whatever confidence they may have about doing business with you or trusting the information that you provide.
