Should I add an archive of hundreds of thousands of pages all at once or in stages?

Thinking about adding tons of pages on your website?

Are you wondering if it’s okay to add a lot of webpages all at once or should it be done in stages? What would Google recommend under such circumstances? Webmasters may find the need to add webpages in bulk especially in the case of news archives or ecommerce websites with literally thousands of product listings.

Go ahead and check out the Google webmaster help video posted above for the search engine’s response to such concerns.

Google’s recommendations on adding a lot of webpages on your website

As mentioned in the video, webmasters can opt to upload massive amounts of webpages either way and the search engine accepts and handles it either way with no problem. However, Google webmaster Matt Cutts highly recommends that webmasters planning to publish a huge amount of webpages online do so in stages and just break it up a little bit so to speak.

While webmasters can very well opt to add thousands of webpages all at once without and having it processed by the search engines, webmasters are more likely to set off flags from the manual webspam team especially when all those webpages suddenly start to rank prompting the search engine to carefully investigate your webpages and your search engine optimisation strategies.

As Matt also points out, it’s fairly rare for webmasters introducing that many webpages to maintain high quality and useful content. Archive pages on news websites are good examples of that as mentioned in the video. In many cases, website owners that introduce a lot of webpages within a short period of time do so with the intention of simply spamming the search engines – a practice that Google utterly dislikes.

What are your own thoughts about adding that many webpages on a site?
