Why might a page with bad backlinks links be ranking highly?

Seeing high ranking websites with bad backlinks?

Oftentimes people come across certain websites that don’t seem to deserve to deserve the high rankings that they enjoy in search engine page results because of poor content or bad backlinks profile. It can certainly frustrate a lot of people who’ve worked so hard with their link building and SEO campaign that it just isn’t fair. How could this be and isn’t Google supposed to take of these websites with the Penguin update?

Now these are probably some of the few sentiments people in online marketing may have about websites that they believe are not deserving of high search engine rankings and there a couple of reasons that would explain why this is so. Let’s go ahead and have a good look at some of them as explained in the Google webmaster video above.

Possible reasons why an “undeserving” website may rank highly even with bad backlinks profile

Indeed there are various reasons why some websites can still manage to attain high search engine rankings even when littered with poor content or spam links. For one thing, it could simply be that Google’s search engine algorithms aren’t that good enough yet to completely assess whether a particular website actually deserves it current search engine rankings or not. Google’s “Penguin” update in particular can’t go after search engine rankings acquired through “hacking”.

One other thing to consider is the fact that unless you are the actual owner of the website in question, you will not be given a full report on all the backlinks pointing towards that website. It is possible that the website may have a couple of links from great and reputable sources like CNN and New York Times.

If you are unsatisfied and still think that a particular website doesn’t deserve the high search engine ranking that it has, one always has the option to submit a spam report and tell Google about a particular website. Google will then run a full audit on the website in question along with the backlinks and quality content. It’s not just a matter of blowing the whistle but such reports can also prove invaluable for improving search engine algorithms and the overall quality of backlinks online.
